My personal 10 in 10 project challenge is over. This time I met my goals. I got the ten projects finished. Some of the projects were from my UFO projects list & some were new projects for customers.

I've got 24 hours left. So far I've completed: the four pieces for the boy's outfit for a customer, two girl's dresses and 4 boy's vests. That's ten. Wow! I still have sometime tomorrow to see what else I can get done. I'll post pictures of all of the finished items over the weekend.

June 6 - Ten in Ten Challenge Update

Just a quick update on my ten in ten days challenge. 

As of this evening, I have finished:

1) a pair of boy's trousers 

2) a boy's shirt

3) a boy's sack coat

4) a girl's dress

Today's project was to redraft a boy's shawl collar vest. I finished the redraft and got the vest cut out and prepped for tomorrow. Tomorrow we will see if I remember how to put it together. It's been awhile. I also got backs cut out for three other vests that are on my UFO list. I'm hoping to finish those by Friday. 

So that's where I'm at right now. If all goes well I'll be adding the vest to the finished list late tomorrow. 

Pictures of the boy's outfit will come after the customer receives it. The picture I posted is the dress I finished today. It just needed buttons & buttonholes.

June 1 - A New Sewing Challenge

Back in March, I challenged myself to finish 31 items by the end of that month. When I think back on it, I'm surprised I finished the number items I did. We had a lot going on in March and April. 

So this month, I've decided to challenge myself again. This time I'm going to try and get 10 items done in 10 days (June 1-10). I'm not reatricting this challenge to only my UFO projects list like I did for my March challenge. My only restriction on this will be that they must be projects for Civil War reenacting (sewn, crocheted or knitted). They can be a "start to finish" project, like the outfit I started today (a four piece boys outfit) or something that's on the UFO project list. 

I'll try posting progress updates everyday.

Just A Quick Update - May 10, 2016

I finally got everything that was finished posted to the mercantile's webshop (www.shop.originals-by-kay.com). Well, everything that I had photographs for. My goal for the future is to try not to procrastinate so much when it comes to adding stuff to the webshop.

There are still four items that need to be photographed. One of those, a black riding habit, I need to ship to a friend with a bigger sized mannequin. The second one is a three piece girl's outfit that needs a new bodice due to an accident with a pair of scissors.  Number three needs the bodice ironed and the last one just needs to be photographed and measured. They will have to wait a couple of days. I have to get three corsets finished.

In the meantime, here are some of the items I posted to the webshop today.

Challenge Update - 4/27/2016

Sorry, I know it's late but here's the update. 

Waiting for the farrier this morning, I was working on my to do list for today & decided to go through my "challenge" list. Yeah, the one I had planned on finishing in March, except I hadn't planned on being sick for almost two weeks & had forgotten we needed to get the house clean for hosting the German exchange student. Anyway, I have gotten some stuff marked off that list since I started working on it in March. I started with 31 items. Eleven projects have been completed - 2 girl's dresses, 2 girl's bodices, 2 girl's skirts, 3 flannel petticoats, a riding habit skirt, and a rain paletot. That's just over 1/3 of the list done, considering everything going on in the last two months, I think that's pretty good. I'm still working on the list so there will be more. 

Maybe, I'll restart my challenge again in May. I'll have to see what else is on my sewing/knitting/crocheting schedule.

Challenge Progress Update - 3/19/2016

Well, the first two weeks of the challenge were spent working on corsets for customers. I finally got started on projects for the challenge on March 15th, I've made a small dent in my projects. Unfortunately, I haven't photographed the finished projects yet. 

These are the projects that are completely finished as of today. The black riding habit skirt, rainwear paletot & the purple/black/pink plaid girl's wool skirt. 

I've also made progress on two of the girls dresses. Those just need buttons and buttonhole, as do the white & pink girl's bodices. 

Since I'm running my weeks from 12:00am Mondays to 11:59pm Sundays, I still have time to get stuff done yet this weekend. Right now, I've got three girl's dress bodices I'm working on today. 

And sew it begins... 3/1/2016

I decided to go ahead with the challenge I touched on in my last post. I went through and made a new list of Civil War sewing projects that I have started and a couple of items that need to get done. Now, this challenges is on top of my "regularly scheduled" sewing projects and a couple of pattern projects that I've been working on getting published. 

Before you ask. Why do you have so many projects to complete? I got in a bad habit of cutting out multiple items when I cut out one project for a customer. Then I set the project aside to finish at a later date. Well, now is the later date. :-)

We'll have to see how it goes, but my plan is to update this blog at least once a week (hopefully more as I get projects done) during the month of March and to get the projects photographed as I finished them.  Keep an eye on www.shop.originals-by-kay.com. Many of these projects will be posted there for sale once completed. 

Now to the challenge. I've divided my master list into three lists. 

The first has 31 items on it. This is the "unless something major happens in March", I should have all of them finished by the end of the month.

2016 Civil War UFO Sewing Project List - Feb 6, 2016

She's challenged herself to make 30 quilt tops in 30 days and she is doing awesome.  Unfortunately, it doesn't look like she's updated her blog yet. Hint..Hint..CH. Hint..Hint.. In the next week or so, I'm going to take a look at what is on my list and go from there.  I'll post more as I figure it out.

UFO Sewing Project Update or I Really Need to Finish Projects That I Start - February 5, 2016

Well, it's been over a year since I started my "crafting diet" and 5 months since I've posted any progress on it. I really need to get better at keeping up on my blog (and getting my projects finished). In my defense, there really has been quite a bit going on. However, I won't go into any of it. This is a new year and we're already into the second month of that new year.

You might remember this list that I included in my post back in January. I've actually gotten quite a bit of it done. New quantities are in red. Notes are in green. So here's the finally tally on my UFO sewing projects from last year.

New Year - No New Projects

I don't do New Year's resolutions. I do try and make one goal a year. This year's goal: clear my 19 knitting/crocheting WIPs (work in progress) and my 65 Civil War clothing UFOs (unfinished objects/projects). Originally, I was going to aim for March 1. I'm still going to aim for getting as many done as possible by then.

What does this mean. It means that except for customer orders or items that my family and I seriously need for certain events. I will not be starting any new knitting, crocheting, or sewing projects until I get the projects that are already started under control. 

How does someone end up with so many unfinished projects?  Most of my sewing UFOs are for the mercantile (www.originals-by-kay.com). I tend to cut out several at a time. Knitting/crochet projects, when pretty yarn or projects call... :-)

Good news though, since I decided to go on this crafting "diet", I've finished one toddler dress (minus buttons), two corsets, two boys' underbodies, one knit hat, one Tunisian crochet sontag, knitted garters, a modern cowl & a pair of soldier's socks for DH. I'll post more about the knitting WIPs on my knitting blog. The toddler dress was one of those projects that just needed to have the skirt attached to the bodice and now it's just waiting for me to get some buttons for it.

That takes me down to 60 UFOs and 14 knitting/crocheting projects.

Starting to Plan the Garden 2014

Even though I received my first seed catalog back in December, I didn't get to sit down and take a look at it until last night. The 2014 SSE (Seed Saver's Exchange) catalog was the first one to come in. I always love their catalog )or any heirloom seed catalog for that matter). And I'm luck enough to have a local nursery that carries their seeds and transplants. However, they are not the only heirloom seed company I use, they don't carry everything (unless your a member then that opens a whole new door to the heirloom seeds).

 For those who don't know, I try to only grow stuff that is considered an heirloom or antique, & OP (open-pollinated) and being an ACW reenactor I try to keep most of my seeds to 1865 or earlier.  I do make an exception to a few items and tomatoes are probably the biggest one. I LOVE home grown tomatoes. I prefer OPs but occasionally I will buy a hybrid. Another is zucchini, all of the researching I've done on heirloom veggies places this as post-CW. I've seen the yellow summer squash listed but nothing that fits the description of the green zucchini.

Anyway, here's what I could find in the printed SSE catalog that are described as being before 1865. The catagories are the ones in the SSE catalog. I've condensed there descriptions, you can find the full descriptions of these varieties on their website, www.seedsavers.org

Wow! I can't believe it has been more than 6 months since I've updated any of my blogs. It has been an extremely busy year so far. Sewing up a storm since April for TWO 150th anniversary Civil War events: Gettysburg in July & Chickamauga in September. I know there will be some people that disagree with this but I thought both were great events. Yes, that is my opinion. Most of the time, even if it's pouring rain the entire weekend (or every afternoon like Gettysburg) as long as I'm "playing" with this particular group of people it will be a great event. Some people would think I'm nuts because I'd rather drive 8+ hours to meet up with this group of friends than stay "home" and play with the local reenactors.  I'm looking forward to the next (last) two years of the 150th anniversaries and I am VERY happy to call all of those who have been with us at the BGA civilian towns friends (and a few family).

Now, the good thing is that all of the sewing and knitting means that the bills are getting paid. The bad thing is that I'm too busy to update blogs, read books (all though I do get a couple in here and there), riding my horse, etc. I did get a chance to go see the Fashion & Art exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago before it closed in September. It was really cool seeing some of the dresses & artwork that I've only seen on the internet in person.  My daughter had been wanting to go down to the AIC to see the Van Gogh paintings they have there. (Thank you, Doctor Who!!)   We also walked over to Buckingham Fountain and Millennium Park. I hadn't been down to Chicago in several years.

Now, that I have a lens on my camera again, another thing I've been trying to find time for is photography. I've found myself playing with the different modes on the camera instead of using m dSLR as a point and shoot. It's been a lot of fun playing and I've even surprised myself with a few of the pictures (and that's before playing with some of the apps and photo software).

I suppose it's time to head back to the sewing machine or pick up the knitting needles again.  Have a great day!

Busy, Busy, Busy - Lots of Sewing & Knitting.

It's been a very busy year so far. Lots of sewing & knitting/crocheting for customers. I've had very little time to get sewing / knitting done for me and my family. What is it they say about the cobblers family never having any shoes.  I think that may ring true for me and mine this year, except that it will be clothing for civil war reenactments.

So far this year I've worked on costumes for the Madrigals at my daughter's school.

I've been working on the normal sewing projects, corsets, lots of corsets. I've also been working on a few women's ensembles. This one is a trimmed wool jacket, white body and silk vest (with antique glass buttons.

Currently, I'm working on girls' dresses, which will be available in the mercantile (Originals by Kay) in a couple of weeks.

I've also been doing quite a bit of knitting when I'm not sewing, you can find out what kind of things I've been working on at my KnittingAside blog.

Eventually, I will move my sewing stuff over to the SewingAside blog (which still doesn't have any content on it) but in the meantime, the sewing stuff and other stuff will stay here.

Just wanted to stop in and let everyone know that I do plan on getting back here and posting.  It's been an extremely busy year so far. Also to wish everyone a Happy Easter!

January 9th - First post of the new year - 2013

First of all, I'm very thankful that the world would end in December. Now, let's move forward and try and make it a better place to live.  There are so many things that can be done.  I think one of the things we really need to work on is our environment, clean air, clean water, clean soil, you get the picture.  I, for one, am very interested in growing heirloom vegetables, not modern hybrids (unless it's something I find completely facinating) and definitely not anything that is a GMO. I'm currently trying to decide what to grow in my garden (and I will post it here what I end up starting/planting).  If you're interested in heirloom or organic gardening, check out Seed Savers Exchange, Baker Creek Heirlooms, Organic Gardening, etc, here on the web (most are on FB also).  Also, talk to you local garden club or even your local library has TONS of books available, go check them out!

Since it is the new year, I know a lot of people have done the whole new year's resolution thing.  I decided this year not to make one but to try and set goals instead.  Hopefully, that will be easier than the whole resolution thing that makes you feel guilty if you don't keep up with it.  My biggest one is trying to get myself and my horse into some semblance of shape. Another one, try and get all of those unfinished projects finished.

It's already been a busy year for sewing and knitting.  I'm currently working on finishing up a wrapper for civil war reenacting and just finished a pair of knitted undersleeves. The finished undersleeves are for sale and the original pattern and my version are posted on my knitting blog.

We're also getting ready for the Midwest Civil War Civilians conference in Fort Wayne, IN.  It will be at the end of the month.  It's a lot of fun and a lot to learn.  You can find more info here.

December 24, 2012 - Christmas Eve

I really wasn't into Christmas until we got snow last week. Not just a little snow, We ended up with about a foot of the white stuff.

Spent 4.5 days in Fort Wayne, traced some patterns and learned how to fit a ballgown bodice. Since then I've been busy sewing, knitting and cleaning to get ready for Christmas. I've got just about everything finished. Men's drawers are all that left, they need a bit of handsewing then buttons & buttonholes, then they're done. So now I'm off to put the sewing away until after Christmas. I will update my other blogs after Christmas when I can get pictures of the items I made for Christmas.
